The saint called Columba
The parish is named after St Columba, the saint who is credited with bringing Christianity to Scotland. St Columba is believed to have had a cell in Kilmacolm. The following short biography is amplified and presented with St Columba's way of life, other reference material and sources in our History section

Born in Ireland, in 521 A.D., St Columba soon took an interest in the church. Tradition has it that after founding several other monasteries, St Columba copied St. Finnian's psalter without the permission of Finnian, and thus devalued the book. St Columba refused to hand over the copy, and King Dermott forced the issue militarily. St Columba's clan defeated Dermott at the battle of Cooldrevny in 561.

Tradition further holds that St Columba was ordered to bring the same number of souls to Christ that he had caused to die as pennance.

St Columba came from Ireland to Scotland, to the colony of Dalriada. With twelve companions St Columba founded his monastery on Iona in the year 563. These Celtic monks lived in communities of separate cells, but St Columba and his companions combined their contemplative life with extraordinary missionary activity.

Amongst his many accomplishments, St Columba was a splendid sailor. He sailed far amongst the islands and travelled deep inland, making converts and founding little churches, including Kilmacolm. Kilmacolm is derived from Kil (church) ma (of) Colm (short form of Columncille or Columbus).

St Columba died in the year 597.
